Wind farm given 2010 start date

Work on a £725m wind farm off the Lincolnshire coast is expected to start in 2010 after the firm behind it approved funding.

The 75-turbine development by Centrica is to be built 8km (5 miles) off the coast of Skegness.

It will be situated next to two smaller 27 turbine wind farms, which were completed by the firm in 2008.

Centrica said the new development would power 200,000 homes when it is completed in 2012.

Sarwjit Sambhi, of Centrica, said residents had been "overwhelmingly positive" about the idea.

The farm, which will sit next to the Lynn and Inner Dowsing farms, will produce 270 MW of electricity.

A third of the UK's electricity will need to come from renewable sources by 2020 as part of the government's carbon reduction target.
