Town criers show off their skills

Town criers have been demonstrating their skills in Darlington town centre in a bid to win an official title.

Ten criers from around the UK are taking part in the two-day event on Saturday and Sunday.

Competition is for four awards: best home cry; best dressed; best specialist cry; and best overall crier.

They are being graded by a panel of judges using the Loyal Company of Town Criers system and the winner will be announced on Sunday.

The competition is being compered by Darlington's town crier, Peter Stemmer, who won won the best dressed crier award at a competition held in Hull earlier in 2009.
