'Big Rescue' raises charity cash

Beach lifeguards at Branksome: Pic RNLI
The RNLI provides lifeguard cover at more than 90 South West beaches

RNLI beach lifeguards and lifeboat crews have taken part in rescue demonstrations in the South West to raise money for the charity.

One Big Rescue took place at Bantham in Devon, St Ives in Cornwall and Branksome beach in Dorset.

The RNLI hopes to raise £500,000 towards the annual £5m cost of lifeguard cover in the three counties.

The service began in 2001 and there are now about 500 lifeguards covering 90 beaches during the summer.

The beach lifeguards work alongside volunteer lifeboat crews.

An RNLI spokesman said One Big Rescue was an ideal opportunity for the charity to demonstrate how it saves lives at sea and on the beach.
