Pair found in missing walker hunt

An elderly woman and her daughter who sparked a rescue operation on the Cumbrian fells have been found.

The alert was raised when the two York women, aged in their 80s and 50s, failed to return to the Hollins Farm campsite in Eskdale on Tuesday night.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team said the pair returned to the site on Wednesday morning. They had camped on the fells overnight after getting lost.

A spokesman said the women were "very apologetic" over the search operation.

Up to 30 members of the mountain rescue team were involved in the operation, along with search and rescue dogs and an RAF helicopter.

The women, who had been with three collie dogs, had set off with the intention of walking on Scafell Pike.
