A man who repeatedly stabbed and slashed a young father in a taxi queue in east Kent has been given an indeterminate life term in jail.

William Wilson, 28, of St Leonards, East Sussex, was found guilty at Maidstone Crown Court of the attempted murder of Michael Brankley last July.

Judge Carey recommended Wilson serve at least six-and-a-half years.

He said Wilson was a dangerous offender with a fixation with knives and posed a significant risk of offending again.

Jurors were told how Wilson attacked Mr Brankley in the early hours after a night out drinking in Dover.

The two men, who had met that night, were queuing for a taxi together when an argument started which led to the attack.

Mr Brankley was left with a six inch scar across his face and suffered nine other injuries in the attack, including stab wounds to his stomach, left thigh and left wrist.

No weapon was recovered, although when Wilson was arrested three months later he was found to be in possession of a Stanley knife.

During the trial, it was decided photographs taken of Mr Brankley's injuries immediately after the attack were too distressing for jurors to see and instead they were shown computer-generated images.

'Scarred for life'

After the hearing, Mr Brankley, from Dover, said: "I can't turn back the clock, but in many respects I feel extremely lucky.

"I could have lost the sight in my left eye if it wasn't for the quick thinking of my friends and the excellent medical treatment I received. I could also have lost my life.

"I have great family support and a beautiful daughter, and I hope from this point that my life can continue to get back on track."

And Det Ch Insp Mick Atkinson said: "William Wilson embarked on his night out last summer carrying a knife, clearly with the intent that should something happen he would cause harm or serious injury.

"His actions have left a young man scarred for life."
