A prison guard has appeared in court accused of selling inmates' details to a newspaper.

Paul Capewell, of South Shields, is charged with removing confidential documents and supplying prisoner data from Durham's Frankland Prison.

The 40-year-old appeared before Consett magistrates on Tuesday, along with his brother, John Capewell from Wallsend, who is accused of aiding and abetting.

They were bailed to appear at Durham Crown Court on 8 April.

Frankland jail is a Category A prison and houses some of the UK's most dangerous inmates, including a number of convicted terrorists.
