Ceremony honours murder victims

Murder victims service
Pictures of loved ones are placed on the altar for the service

Hundreds of bereaved relatives from around the UK have attended a special memorial service on Tyneside.

The North of England Victims' Association (Neva) held the annual event for families and friends of murder or manslaughter victims.

The service on Saturday at St Mary's Cathedral in Newcastle is believed to be the largest gathering of its kind.

Relatives had the chance to place photographs of loved ones on the altar and light candles in their memories.

The service was led by the newly appointed Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, Seamus Cunningham.

Afterwards there was a white balloon release, with one balloon for each murder victim represented.
