Flood warnings have been issued for rivers in Sussex and fire crews have been called to pump water from properties after heavy rain.

It followed downpours which saw about 20mm rainfall in 12 hours overnight.

Kent was also affected by heavy rain with part of the M20 near Wrotham closed during the early hours, the Highways Agency said.

The westbound A27 at Polegate near Eastbourne, East Sussex, was also closed, but has since reopened.

Sewage flood

Environment Agency flood warnings were issued for rivers across East Sussex.

They were for the River Ouse at Barcombe, Lewes; the Cuckmere River and Bull River at Hellingly, Hailsham; and the River Uck and confluence with the River Ouse at Isfield, Uckfield.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said crews removed a car from flood water in Petworth after heavy rain began on Thursday night.

They were called to flooding from a sewage pipe in Littlehampton at about 0330 GMT, when a building containing two flats was left surrounded by foul water.

Firefighters also pumped water from a property in Sidlesham, and from the basement boiler room of a house in Horsham.
