Fireworks lit up the Liverpool skyline on Saturday as the curtain fell on its year as European Capital of Culture.

A surfer, wearing a neoprene hat and gloves along with his wetsuit, braved the winter swell during Arctic weather on Saturday in Woolacombe, North Devon.

Man shovelling sea coal

A man shovelled coal in to the back of a Land Rover from a beach in Hartlepool. Piles are dumped there from seams at sea and provide income for those prepared to brave the elements.

Sunrise in Gloucestershire

The sun rose through mist over frost-covered fields near Wotton-under-Edge, in Gloucestershire, on Wednesday.

The Astoria

The Astoria, one of London's best known music venues, held a farewell "Demolition Ball". It is being knocked down to make way for Crossrail.

Field near Sipson

A controversial plan to build a third runway at Heathrow got the go-ahead on Thursday. It will lead to the demolition of the village of Sipson.

London's Olympic Park

And work continues on the Olympic Park in Stratford, London. Friday marked the mid-way point between the bid win and the 2012 games.
