Speech facility on police website

Devon and Cornwall police has installed a new speech facility on its website to enable more people to access its information on the internet.

The computer programme reads the online content aloud and highlights each word as it is spoken.

It is hoped that the elderly, people with dyslexia, mild eyesight problems and learning difficulties will find the text-to-speech system useful.

People whose first language is not English are also expected to benefit.

Karen Gandy, force web and digital media manager, said the facility had been introduced to ensure the website was accessible to the widest possible community.
