In pictures: Big freeze hits England

Nick and Clina Hopwood and their son Tom walk along the beach in the Sandbanks area of Poole, Dorset, where the sea froze due to extreme low temperatures.

Temperatures plunged to nearly -12C (10.4F) across southern England. This goose walks on a frozen pond near Ashford in Kent.

Also frozen over were fountains in Trafalgar Square, London.

A fen skater makes the most of the cold snap by gliding across a flooded field in the village of Earith, Cambridgeshire, watched by a crowd.

The beautiful frozen field led several people to hunt out their skates.

And skiers in Allenheads, in the Tyne Valley, enjoyed another day on the slopes after more snow fell on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
