Bishop stands down after 40 years

The Bishop of Ludlow has announced he is to retire after 40 years' service in the same diocese.

The Right Reverend Michael Hooper, who has spent his entire career in the Diocese of Hereford, will step down from the role at the end of June.

The Bishop of Hereford Anthony Priddis said Bishop Hooper was "hugely loved, appreciated and respected".

The diocese, which covers Herefordshire and south Shropshire, said it was now looking for his successor.

Bishop Hooper began his priesthood as a curate in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, before moving across the county to serve in Minsterley and Habberley, and later served as the Dean of Pontesbury.

Later, he moved to become vicar of Leominster Priory and became Bishop of Ludlow in 2002.

"In many ways, Bishop Michael is the Diocese of Hereford," said Bishop Priddis.

He added: "He will be sorely missed when he leaves us, but he will leave a great heritage with the diocese in good heart, not least from his own unstinting work."

A service will be held later in the year at Hereford Cathedral to pay tribute to Bishop Hooper.
