Prisoner is found hanged in cell

A prisoner awaiting trial has been found hanged in his cell in Norfolk, the Prison Service said.

Martin Dixon, 48, from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, was discovered at HMP Norwich on Sunday morning.

Prison and ambulance staff attempted to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead half-an-hour later.

He faced charges of theft, causing actual bodily harm and perverting the course of justice. The prisons ombudsman will investigate the death.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Dixon.

"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
