England star faces assault charge

Lesley Vainikolo was bailed to appear at crown court on 13 January

Gloucester and England rugby player Lesley Vainikolo has appeared in court accused of attacking a man outside a nightclub in Bath.

The 29-year-old winger from Cheltenham appeared at Bath Magistrates' Court where he was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

A man in his 20s was treated in hospital for head injuries following the incident on 26 October.

Mr Vainikolo will next appear at Bristol Crown Court on 13 January.

The Tongan-born winger made his England debut in last year's Six Nations tournament.

He has won five England caps after becoming eligible through UK residency.
