Public pool closes after 72 years

A popular swimming pool which has been a key part of life in Newmarket for 72 years is due to close on Friday night.

Newmarket Swimming Pool is to be replaced by a new swimming pool complex in Exning Road, which is due to open in January 2009.

Local resident John Ginder, 73, said: "I will always look back at the pool with affection and have many great memories of happy hours spent there."

He said the pool was a "huge leisure and social attraction".

Any customers still wanting to swim between 12 December and when the new pool opens in January will be welcome at Mildenhall Swimming Pool.
