More than 100 pigeons have died in a blaze which swept through an allotment in County Durham.

Firefighters were called to Hawthorne Street in Easington Colliery, on Saturday, after reports timber huts, being used as bird lofts, were on fire.

It took two crews an hour to bring the blaze under control, a spokeswoman for Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service confirmed.

Around 130 pigeons died in blaze and the cause is being investigated.
