A driver has been charged with causing the death of a second man by dangerous driving after two men and a boy were hit by a car in County Durham.

Bryan Hardwick, 26, died last month when he was hit by a car after picking conkers in Bishop Auckland. David Weatherburn, 40, died nine days later.

Anthony Whittacker, 26, of Cheesmond Avenue, Bishop Auckland, was charged with causing Mr Hardwick's death.

On Friday he was also charged with causing Mr Weatherburn's death.

Mr Whittacker is also charged with the theft of three boxes of lager from a nearby supermarket, and driving while disqualified.

He has been remanded in prison and is due back in court next week.

Bryan Hardwick's two-year-old son Liam was treated in hospital after the incident but has now recovered from his injuries.

A 14-year-old boy who had been travelling in the car was still being treated at Newcastle General Hospital.
