Naval inquiry into assault claims

An inquiry has begun into claims that a member of the Royal Navy based in Cornwall was subjected to a physical and sexual assault.

The Royal Navy Special Investigation Branch is conducting the investigation and has made a number of arrests.

The alleged victim is believed to be based at the Royal Navy's HMS Raleigh training centre at Torpoint, Cornwall.

The alleged assault is believed to have taken place after an incident at the National Shooting Centre in Surrey.

A spokesman said: "The Royal Navy takes allegations of assault very seriously.

"As this is an ongoing investigation it would be inappropriate to make any further comment about the case at this stage."

"The alleged victim has been, and continues to be, offered full welfare, pastoral and divisional support.

"As far as possible the alleged victim has been kept informed of the progress of the investigation."
