Purse theft warning to shoppers

Shoppers have been warned to keep their purses concealed, following a series of thefts targeting elderly women.

Up to three people approach victims in supermarket car parks and ask them for directions, Thames Valley Police said.

The victim's purse is then stolen and cash withdrawals are later made or items bought using their cards.

Thieves have struck in Witney, Wantage, Abingdon, Wallingford, High Wycombe, Newbury, Twyford, Wokingham and Milton Keynes.

Pc Jennifer Scott said: "Each of the victims has been left very shaken."

Crime reduction officer John McNicholas said: "These offenders are using a distraction technique to steal belongings from shoppers in supermarket car parks.

"These people are very plausible and it seems these victims have been easily duped into helping because the offender has taken advantage of their kind nature."
