A murder inquiry has begun in Essex into the disappearance of a 41-year-old man who was last seen on 15 September.

Paul Duckenfield, who lives in Portugal with his wife and family, had arrived at Stansted Airport on an Easyjet flight but then vanished.

A 46-year-old Essex man was arrested on suspicion of Mr Duckenfield's murder.

Det Supt Tim Wills appealed to Mr Duckenfield to confirm he is safe, but added: "I think that is unlikely and he may no longer be alive."

Mr Duckenfield had been due to return to Portugal on 19 September.

Police appeal

His wife reported him missing and detectives in Derbyshire, where he had previously lived, began enquiries to trace him.

The man arrested on suspicion of murder, following a raid on a house in the Braintree area of Essex, was later released on bail but remains in custody on unrelated matters.

Mr Duckenfield is believed to have been involved in the supply of steroids to athletes and body builders.

Police have urged anyone involved in athletics, body building or gyms, who may have had contact with Mr Duckenfield over the supply of steroids, to contact them.

He is described as white, 5ft 8ins, of thin build with short brown hair and has a tattoo on his right shoulder.
