A former deputy head teacher has been charged with assaulting a 13-year-old pupil at a Berkshire school.

Andrew Johnson is facing a count of assault against the boy at Reading's John Madejski Academy on 23 June.

The 35-year-old, from Peterborough, who has since left the academy, is due before Reading magistrates on Monday.

He had been due to start as principal at the City of Ely Community College in Cambridgeshire, but the college said he would not now be working there.

"Due to a change in his personal circumstances, the governors and leadership team regret to inform you that Andy Johnson will not be joining the college as principal", a statement on the college's website read.

The Berkshire academy is sponsored by the chairman of Reading Football Club, John Madejski.
