Memorial named as leading project

The national Armed Forces Memorial at Alrewas
The Armed Forces Memorial was among 21 projects nominated

A memorial in Staffordshire to fallen service personnel was named among the nation's top National Lottery projects.

The Armed Forces Memorial was one of seven community projects voted for by the public to receive a National Lottery: Big 7 Award.

A total of 21 projects were nominated for the £2,000 prizes.

Redditch Nightstop in Worcestershire, which provides shelter for young people who have left home, was one of the other category winners.

Viewers gave the Staffordshire memorial the award in the Heritage category.

It is dedicated to those who have died during active service since 1948.

The memorial was created because many veterans and their families felt there was insufficient recognition of those who had given their lives in conflict since World War II.
