Search on for most tranquil place

The search is on to find the most tranquil place in County Durham.

The county's tourism partnership launched the survey in the run-up to Durham's hosting of the annual UK Peace and Tranquillity Week later this month.

Research in 2005 identified County Durham as one of the best places in the UK to find much needed relaxation.

People can vote for their top tranquil place on a website set up by the partnership. The winner will be announced before the end of September.

'Magic of region'

Melanie Sensicle, chief executive of the partnership, said: "Durham is perfectly placed to be the national home of peace and tranquillity.

"We are hoping that the people of the North East will identify their favourite Durham place for tranquillity and help visitors share in the magic of our region."

More than 20 events will take place during UK Peace and Tranquillity Week to encourage people to take time out from the stresses and strains of daily life and indulge in rest and relaxation.

These include free reflexology and Tai Chi taster sessions, a harpist playing at Beamish Museum and sketching and painting workshops on the banks of the River Wear.
