National Grid wants to place the gas installation in a field at Corse

Revised plans for a gas installation in the north of Gloucestershire have been unveiled for public consultation.

National Grid wants to locate a pressure reduction plant in either Tirley or Corse.

It would allow gas from Milford Haven, in South Wales, to be fed into the national network at the correct pressure.

An initial application, submitted last December amid fierce local opposition, was rejected by the government.

Extensive landscaping

Peter McMurtrie, one of the people opposing the plan, said the proposal for Corse - on the border with Worcestershire - was not much different from the application rejected last year.

"It is identical, in terms of location, to the application they made which was subject of the appeal which they lost," he said.

"It is in the same field, it just uses a larger area. Notwithstanding the fact the area is larger, we still consider that the field is totally unsuitable."

But David Mercer, project manager with National Grid, said the new plans had been improved.

"The site at Corse is further back from the road than our original application, it's a bigger site to enable more landscaping," he said.

"The alternative site at Tirley is even further off the road network and we will putting extensive landscaping around them."

The installation is part of a new £1bn natural gas pipeline, stretching from Wales to Gloucestershire, which is the subject of a European Commission investigation.
