A man has appeared in court accused of causing death by dangerous driving after a father-of-two died during a police pursuit on a motorway.

Barry Taylor, 22, of no fixed address, appeared before magistrates in Consett, following the death of William Forrest.

Mr Forrest, 52, of Newcastle, died when his car was hit by a Mitsubishi that flipped over on the A1(M).

The Mitsubishi was being followed by police vehicles on Friday when it overturned at Bowburn, County Durham.

Mr Taylor was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Durham Crown Court on 30 July.

He is also charged with stealing the car keys to three vehicles from a house in Chester-le-Street.

Mr Forrest, who was the father of two grown-up sons and worked as a printer for a company in Darlington, suffered head injuries and died at the scene of the crash.
