Unitary planners seek local views

Durham County council drew up the unitary plans

Residents are to be consulted about how County Durham's new unitary council can best serve local communities.

The county-wide authority will replace the region's seven district councils in April 2009.

Critics say an all-encompassing council will hit local services, but Durham County Council claims it will reduce bureaucracy and increase efficiency.

Consultation with local organisations and parish councils starts on Monday and runs throughout the summer.

The consultation period will last until the end of August.
