Grates and manhole covers stolen

Motorists have been warned about holes in the road after 100 grates and 25 manhole covers were stolen in Sussex and Kent.

The grates were taken from towns across East Sussex, while the manholes were taken from Strood, north Kent.

East Sussex Council believes the grates, which cost £300 to replace, are being sold as scrap metal.

Medway Council said the manhole covers would cost a total of £7,500 to replace.

An East Sussex council spokesman said: "These thieves are not only stealing public property and delaying much-needed work on the roads, but are putting the public in danger."
