One person has died in a fire at a block of flats in east London.

About 20 residents escaped from Coopers Court in Mile End before firefighters arrived at 0315 BST.

Forty firefighters tackled the blaze at the flats in Wentworth Mews. One flat was said to be destroyed, with another two extensively damaged.

Police say the victim was found dead on a staircase. Fire engines remain at the scene and road closures are in place in the surrounding area.
