'Totally devastating'

Jon Hunt, who chairs Birmingham City Council's children and education committee, said everybody was devastated.

"Dan was a terrific young headmaster," he said.

"He's done wonderful things for the school in the last couple of years and to lose him so suddenly and unexpectedly is totally devastating."

Mr Hunt added that counselling wound be available to children and teachers.

Sgt David Carknee said the investigation into the crash would be lengthy.

"There's a major incident and we're trying to piece together the events that happened, so we're appealing for witnesses who were travelling on the motorway at that time to come forward with information," he said.
