The Church of England has revealed the new Bishop of Huntingdon.

The Venerable Dr David Thomson has been given the role in the Diocese of Ely which spans Cambridgeshire and parts of Norfolk, Essex and Bedfordshire.

Born in Sunderland and currently Archdeacon Of Carlisle, Dr Thomson replaces the Right Reverend Dr John Inge, who is now Bishop of Worcester.

The father-of-four said he was "immensely looking forward to getting to know new friends and colleagues".

Dr Thomson was curate of Maltby, Yorkshire and rector of Cockermouth in Cumbria before becoming Archdeacon of Carlisle and Cathedral Canon.

The diocese said the new Bishop of Huntingdon would undertake a range of responsibilities including the ordination for the ministry of deacon and priest and confirmation of new Christians.

Dr Inge left the Diocese of Ely after 12 years - five of which he spent as bishop.
