Police tactics halve burglaries

Burglaries in Cambridge were almost halved during December compared to the same month last year, police have said.

To date there have been 98 burglaries committed since the beginning of December compared to 186 in 2006.

Det Insp Alan Page said: "Traditionally this time of year always sees an increase in offences."

Crime reduction initiatives, putting prolific offenders behind bars and raids on suspect addresses have helped cut offences, he said.

"We have used a number of tactics to ensure that we make it as difficult as possible for burglars to operate.

Trail of evidence

"This work has seen thorough investigations, high visibility patrols, continued work with the community on crime reduction initiatives, getting a handful of prolific offenders put behind bars and the execution of a number of warrants."

Residents are also encouraged to register property on the free Immobilise website.

If registered items are recovered after being lost or stolen they can be quickly reunited with their owners.

The system also provides police with the trail and evidence they need to bring successful prosecutions against those who steal or handle stolen goods.
