Coastal defence project complete
A project which saw tens of thousands of tonnes of limestone imported from France to slow down coastal erosion in Kent has been completed.

The work, which was carried out late at night to make the best use of high tides at Warden Bay, on Sheppey, will protect 400 homes, Swale Council said.

Principal engineer Ian Lewis said it meant residents could have "peace of mind" about their homes.

It was one of two South East projects. The other was at Fairlight, in Sussex.

Homes have been lost from cliff tops at Fairlight Cove, near Hastings.

Work to shore up the cliffs also took place on that part of the Sussex coastline this summer.

The limestone, shipped from across the Channel, was used in both of the schemes which were backed by Defra.
