A father and toddler son who were found in the sea off West Sussex both died as a result of drowning, police have said.

The body of Alan Watkins, 50, from Southwark, south-east London, was recovered from the water off the coast at Littlehampton on Tuesday afternoon.

His two-year-old son, Arun, was found floating in the sea on Sunday evening and died later in hospital.

Sussex Police said "inquiries into the circumstances of their deaths were the matter of an on-going investigation".

Mr Watkins and his son were reported to have gone into the sea at Littlehampton in a dinghy between 1630 BST and 1700 BST on Sunday.

Police said they had been on a "pre-arranged day out", but they were later reported missing by Mr Watkins' wife.

Two men in a yacht found Arun's body after a dinghy containing only nappies and a child's armbands was seen drifting in the water.

His father was spotted by a kite surfer two days later.
