Carie Burns died after being stabbed twice
A man has appeared in court charged over the death of a 21-year-old woman who was stabbed after a house party in County Durham.

Carie Burns, 21, who had recently moved to Consett in County Durham from Cumbria, died in Durham's University Hospital on 12 May.

Hugh Penrose, 36, of Thomas Street, Consett, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court charged with murder.

No pleas were entered and Mr Penrose was remanded in custody until 18 July.

An inquest into Miss Burns' death was opened and adjourned last week.

Miss Burns had lived with her mother, Tracey Wilson, in Grasmere Crescent, Kendal, until April, when she moved to Consett.
