Man remanded over partygoer death

Carie Burns died after being stabbed with a sword
A man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a partygoer.

Hugh Penrose is accused of stabbing Carie Burns twice with a samurai sword then running over her with a car after a house party in Blackhill, Consett.

The 21-year-old, who only moved to the area from Cumbria a month ago, died in Durham's University hospital on Friday.

Mr Penrose, 36, of Thomas Street, Blackhill, was remanded in custody by Derwentside magistrates until 24 May. No application for bail was made.
