HQ decision for new Rifles unit
The Royal Gloucestershire Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment
Outstations will maintain the traditional regimental footprint
The new Rifles regiment, due to come into operation next year as the result of a merger between four infantries, is to be based at Winchester.

The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire (RGBW) will merge with The Light Infantry, Royal Green Jackets and Devonshire and Dorsets next year.

The new headquarters will be supported by existing outstations to maintain the traditional regimental footprint.

None of the regimental museums for the four units will be closing.

The restructuring of regimental headquarters (RHQs) is part of a major military shake-up, with the merger taking place next February.

'Maximum support'

A statement by the armed forces minister Adam Ingram said the new structure would "continue to give maximum support to our soldiers while making the most effective use of taxpayers' money."

The Rifles will have five battalions in all, with a variety of roles and locations.

The majority of RGBW soldiers will move to the new 1st battalion, which will be based in Beachley Barracks, Chepstow, from August next year.

A fierce campaign was fought by the RGBW regiment against merger or possible disbandment during the government's defence shake-up.

It was decided last year that the unit would not be split up, but would be amalgamated.
