Recycling site in £750,000 revamp
A revamped household waste recycling centre in Darlington has become the biggest in the region.

The Darlington Council site, run by Premier Waste Management, reopened this month after a £750,000 refurbishment.

It is now so popular that it has become the biggest recycling site in the area in terms of tonnage received.

The refurbishment doubled the size of the Whessoe Road site and created facilities for recycling green waste, timber, cardboard, soil and rubble.

It is hoped that the site will eventually deal with 60% of the borough's recycling.

Stephen Harker, Darlington Council's cabinet member for consumer and environmental service, said: "The work has made it much easier for people to recycle a wide variety of material and I hope it will encourage more people to think about what they do with their rubbish."

The centre is open on New Year's Day and un-decorated, real Christmas trees can be dropped off.
