Steam train wheels back the years

The steam train is the main feature of Mid-Cheshire Rail Day
More than 1,000 people will travel back to steam's golden age on Sunday.

They have booked a place on a steam train which will operate between Chester in Cheshire and Altrincham in Greater Manchester.

It is the main feature on Mid-Cheshire Rail Day, which will include the rededication of Northwich station.

The mayors of Trafford, Macclesfield and Vale Royal will attend the event which has been organised by the Mid Cheshire Community Rail Partnership.

The partnership is formed by local authorities, transport companies, the Rail Users Association and other stakeholders in the line.

Bands will be performing at Northwich and Chester stations, and normal service trains will be available at half-fare.

Organisers, who say the steam train is now fully booked for Sunday, say it is the lead event for a community rail day taking place on 14 May on community railways across the UK.

Northwich station is nearing the end of a £750,000 regeneration programme as a community learning centre.
