Victim Clare Bernal
Clare Bernal was staying with her father for her own safety
The funeral of shop assistant Clare Bernal who was shot dead in Harvey Nichols is being held in Kent.

Miss Bernal, 22, who grew up in Tunbridge Wells, had recently moved to live with her father for her safety.

Her killer, ex-boyfriend Michael Pech, had previously threatened to kill her, and had admitted harassment. He shot her and then turned the gun on himself.

The burial was being held on Monday in Tunbridge Wells. The family asked for privacy and to be left alone to grieve.

Miss Bernal went to St Gregory's Roman Catholic Comprehensive in the town and studied beauty therapy at West Kent College after leaving school.

Prayers were said at the school after her death and staff at the Tonbridge college, where she was a student from 1999 until 2001, said they were "deeply saddened".

Miss Bernal achieved a BTEC national diploma at West Kent, which qualified her to work as a beauty consultant at the exclusive central London store.

She had recently returned to live with her father in Orpington, south east London.

Former Harvey Nichols security guard Pech, 30, had a brief relationship with Ms Bernal, but after it ended he is said to have pestered her with phone calls and started following her.

Pech, who had threatened to kill Miss Bernal in March, had been on bail on the condition he did not contact her or go to Dulwich Village, south east London, where she lived.

On 13 September, he walked into Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge, and shot her several times in the head, before killing himself.

He was due in court on 21 September for sentencing after pleading guilty to harassment.
