A woman has died after being hit by a car on a main road in Tyne and Wear.

It happened early on Sunday on the northbound carriageway of the A1, near the Granada Services in Washington.

The 28-year-old woman was crossing the road when she was hit by a Fiat. A second car crashed into the central reservation trying to avoid the scene.

The woman was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead where she died. Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

The woman had been given a lift to Washington from The Gate in Newcastle by a white minibus and police are also appealing for the occupants to contact them.
