A man charged with sex attacks at two separate universities in 1989 was refused bail on Wednesday.
Paul Collings is accused of raping a 21-year-old woman at the University of Sussex in Brighton and an 18-year-old at the University of Kent, Canterbury.
He applied to Maidstone Crown Court for bail via a video link from Elmley Prison in Sheppey.
Mr Collings, 38, of Icklesham, near Hastings, is due before Maidstone Crown Court on 21 February to enter pleas.
Scientific evidence
He is also charged with two counts of indecent assault on another 18-year-old woman at Kent university.
The alleged attacks took place in October and December 1989.
Mr Collings was arrested in a joint operation between Sussex and Kent Police on 14 December.
Andrew Lewis, defending, said he was expected to plead not guilty to the charges, and added that the case hinged on scientific evidence.
