Eurostar moves base to St Pancras

Eurostar is to move its Waterloo operation to St Pancras
Eurostar services to London will stop at St Pancras, instead of Waterloo, when the Channel Tunnel Rail Link is finished in 2007, it has been revealed.

The company claims the move will benefit Kent commuters by freeing up domestic train routes into Waterloo.

Benefits of moving the whole operation outweighed the need to operate some trains from Waterloo, the company said.

It had been thought that Eurostar might keep its Waterloo operation on when the link was completed.

A spokesman for Eurostar, which celebrated its 10th anniversary on Sunday, said: "This will bring many passengers from the Midlands and Yorkshire," he said.

The rail firm is planning to make the change either overnight or within a period of days in order to minimise impact on passengers, he added.

'Commuters to benefit'

Eurostar has also said journey times will be quicker and the firm will have lower costs by operating from only one station.

The spokesman also said domestic commuters would benefit from faster access into Waterloo and the opening of more routes, with opportunities for rail operators to use the vacated capacity.

Passengers will be able to begin Eurostar journeys from St Pancras, Stratford, Ashford, or Ebbsfleet in Dartford.

Last year the company made a loss of almost 42 million. In 2002, the loss was more than 92 million.

Eurostar chairman Guillaume Pepy has said that the company's goal is to become profitable by 2007.
