Seized guns
Handguns, rifles and shotguns were seized
A large quantity of guns has been seized in a crackdown on illegal weapons bought over the internet.

More than 100 weapons were found and 37 people arrested as police raided 47 homes across London over four days.

Some 86 handguns, 10 rifles, seven shotguns, 13 stun guns, laser sights and components for more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition were also seized.

The operation - codenamed Bembridge - targeted internet sites and officers also posed as potential online buyers.

Three men were also arrested in Thirsk, Richmond and Selby and a replica handgun and a stun gun were seized, a North Yorkshire police spokesperson said.

Armed officers were involved in two of the arrests as part of the national crackdown.

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur said: "This is the climax of a long-term intelligence operation where we have identified weaponry purchased over the internet.

"I am delighted by its success and the sheer number of firearms, ammunition and other weapons seized will make London a safer city."

Superintendent Martin Deacon, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "Anyone who makes such a purchase stands a very real chance of having a group of armed police knocking on his door."
