Crowds cheer on university rowers
Rowers
Conditions on the Tyne were perfect for the event
Thousands of people lined the banks of the river Tyne to see an annual clash of oars.

Members of Newcastle and Durham University boat clubs went head to head for the 2004 Northumbrian Water University Boat Race.

More than 8,000 people saw Durham take the title on Sunday - for the eighth year running.

The 2003 event had to be cancelled at the last minute because bad weather meant the river was too rough.

In the main race of the day, the Durham Men's VIII pipped the Newcastle Men's VIII at the post, winning by just one-third of a length.

'Great race'

Durham University crews also beat Newcastle in the three other races, winning the Women's VIII by one length and the Novice Men's VIII and Novice Women's VIII by more comfortable margins.

Among other entertainment were jet ski displays, a canoe polo tournament, dragon boat racing and a sail past by the North East Boating Federation.

On-shore entertainment was provided by street theatre group Artizani and the Newcastle All Stars Steel Band.

Chairman of the boat race executive committee, Graham Rayner, said: "The men's VIII was a great race - full of excitement right up to the line, providing the highlight of a really entertaining day.

"Newcastle didn't win a race this year, but are determined to return next year in a stronger position to take on their rivals.

"It was an absolutely marvellous day, with the hot weather bringing out the crowds to enjoy the delightful setting of the Newcastle and Gateshead quaysides, which must be one of the most attractive water-sports amphitheatres in the world."

Durham University Boat Club was already riding high after winning the British Universities Rowing Championship earlier this month.
