Lib Dem plan for fast rail link
A plan to create a high-speed rail link through central England which could be up and running by 2023 has been unveiled by the Liberal Democrats.

The 12bn link would cut journey times from London to Edinburgh to three hours, with stops at Birmingham, Leeds and Newcastle.

The aim would be to relieve pressure from the rail network, the Lib Dem party conference in Bournemouth heard.

The party is outlining its strategy for the general election campaign.
