Stoke City are to honour a soldier killed in Iraq, with a minute's silence at their next home game.
The First Division club said the tribute to Corporal Stephen Allbutt, who was killed last week when his
tank came under "friendly fire" near Basra, would take place before Saturday's
match with Gillingham at the Britannia Stadium.
Corporal Allbutt, 35, of Sneyd Green, Stoke-on-Trent, was an avid supporter of the Potters.
A City spokesman said: "We are pleased that, after consultations with
Corporal Allbutt's family and his regiment, the family and representatives of
the Queen's Royal Lancers have accepted our invitation to attend the fixture.
"The minute's silence is an opportunity for the club and all supporters to
pay their respects to Corporal Allbutt, his family, his regiment and to all the
victims of the current conflict in Iraq."
Corporal Allbutt died together with Trooper David Clarke, 19, from Littleworth, Stafford.
