A lorry driver was crushed to death when he was caught between a fork lift truck and quarrying equipment, police said.

The 53-year-old man, from Whitby, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, died at Cavendish Mill in Stoney Middleton, Derbyshire on Tuesday.

Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have launched an investigation into the incident, which happened on the premises of Glebe Mining.

A HSE spokesman said: "It is believed that the man was crushed between a fork lift truck and a caterpillar loading shovel.

"An investigation with the police is being carried out at the scene."

The man, who has not been named, was injured at around 1120 GMT at the site's limestone processing plant, close to the quarry.

Police said he was airlifted to the Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Royal Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

"A post-mortem examination is taking place this afternoon, but we are not treating the death as suspicious," a Derbyshire police spokesman said.
