A shepherd who allowed 118 sheep to starve to death in a Suffolk field when he was supposed to be looking after them for other farmers has been jailed for six months.
But Edward Howard, 43, of Churnwood Road in Colchester, Essex, walked free from the magistrates court in Ipswich on Thursday as he appealed against the sentence.
Howard had admitted 18 counts of animal cruelty in relation to the sheep, who were spending the winter on Bentwaters Airfield near Woodbridge.
Trading standards officers found the sheep on inspection of the grazing land at the former RAF airbase.
The court heard that 40 more sheep had to be destroyed because they were so weak.
The sheep belonged to farmers in Yorkshire.
