Cathedral tower project moves forward
St Edmundsbury Cathedral
The new tower should be completed next year
The first phase of a millennium project at the cathedral in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk has been completed.

Work to build a new tower for St Edmundsbury Cathedral started nearly three years ago.

The £11m project is funded by the National Lottery and money from a public appeal.

The new tower should be completed next year.

The Suffolk Cathedral Millennium Project aims to complete the tower, which is the last unfinished Anglican cathedral in England.

The nave was built between 1503 and 1551 and altered in the 19th century.

The east end was completely rebuilt in 1963-70 but the tower and other works were left unfinished.

Phase one of the project involves preparing the foundations of the planned tower, so that work can begin on building the actual tower.
