Call to end show confusion

The director of a Cornish agricultural show is calling on Defra to clarify the rules on the movement of animals so that organisers can start planning for next year's shows.

It is feared some shows could have their dates changed becase there is confusion over where livestock is allowed.

Defra says there should be no problems because it has introduced a special exemption for exhibition animals.

But the director of Launceston Show, Julian Stanbury, says there is still uncertainty surrounding the issue.

Earthwatch award for Cornish woman

A woman from Cornwall will soon be travelling to Peru to research rivers in the Amazonian rainforest.

Jenny Hart from Liskeard has won an Earthwatch Millennium Award to study how the rivers work, how they are used by the Peruvians, and what animals live around them.

Her final research data will be presented to the United Nations.

It will be used when policies on conservation are put together.

Seal cull call

Fishermen who work around Cornwall's coast say their industry is suffering because of damage caused by seals.

They claim they are destroying nets, and eating many of the fish they have caught.

There are now calls for a cull to stop the seals costing the fishing industry so much money - and there are warnings some fishermen may be forced out of the industry if nothing is done.

Eddie Derriman, chief fishery officer at the Cornwall Sea Fisheries Committee, says a cull could still be a long way off, but is being discussed.

Investigation into funeral

A funeral which took place in Cornwall without the person's death being registered is being investigated.

Dignity Funerals Limited says one of its branches, WJ Angove and Son in Falmouth, discovered the death had not been registered on the day of the funeral.

Falmouth Town Council which owns the cemetery gave permission for the burial to go ahead anyway.

The matter is being investigated by the Registrar General's office in Southampton.
